"...the churches of Christ salute you..."
Romans 16:16

A GOOD MINISTER

In a number of his epistles, the apostle Paul mentions a number of men who served as ministers in the local congregations during the first century of the church.

Among them, would be Timothy and Titus, whom he specifically, called his own sons in the Faith. He was confident that they would do the things necessary in the churches to see to it that those congregations would grow and be an example to others who needed encouragement.

To Timothy, Paul wrote:

"If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ" (I Timothy 4:6).

"From a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus" (I Timothy 3:15).

Likewise, to Titus, he wrote:

"To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city" (Titus 1:4,5).

These verse will be ample to show the work of a true Preacher of God. Timothy had been trained by Paul. Paul relied upon Titus. These two men would carry on the work just as they had been taught by the great apostle. They were both..."good ministers" of Christ.

What are some of the things we should see in the true minister of God?

  • A true minister will always teach the truth. The minister is commanded to preach the whole truth of God (2 Tim. 4: 2, 3).
  • A good minister will know the doctrine of God. These men had been taught the truth. Timothy was said to have know the truth from his youth up (2 Tim. 3:15). There will people who will oppose the truth, sot he true minister will resist them ( 2 Tim. 3:8).
  • A good minister will keep himself pure. He will be pure, in body and spirit ( 2 Tim. 2:20-22). Look at the mistrust that has been generated in the last few years by some who took advantage of people. The true minister of God will not only teach the truth, he will live the truth.
  • A good minister will not delay in rebuking, when rebuking is needful, and, he will encourage when it is time to encourage. "Them that sin rebuke before all...Do not prefer one before another and do nothing by partiality" (I Timothy 5:20,21).
  • A good minister will labor and suffer reproach. Since his first loyalty is to the Lord, nothing will keep him from fulfilling his duty. He will stand against ever evil. He will continue to bring lessons to edify and encourage, but he will rebuke when rebuke is necessary.

You should be sure that you listen to the minister as he brings lessons. Encourage him when he preaches the truth, admonish him when if he tries to step aside from the truth of the Gospel.
It is a serious business to preach the gospel of Christ.
