"DON'T BE SELFISH" A man knocked on the door of the preacher's house, and with tearful eyes , he told of a poor widow who was about to be evicted unless someone paid her rent. The preacher went with the tearful stranger to the home of the widow. Sure enough, she was about to be evicted. The preacher made arrangements to have the poor widow's rent paid. Turning to the stranger, who was wiping his eyes with his handkerchief, the preacher inquired: "And, who are you, kind stranger?" To which the weeping man replied: "Why, I am the landlord!" Can you believe it? How easy it is to be selfish. My little grandson taught me a lesson that I shall never forget. I had bought William a hamburger. As we drove out onto the access road of the freeway, there stood a panhandler. William said: "Stop grandpa. I want to give him my hamburger." I said: "William, are you sure? That man probably doesn't even need it and you are hungry." "No, grandpa, we must help other people." And, with that he handed the man his hamburger. The man said: "God bless you, son." I thought to myself..."Well, you've lost a hamburger." But, no! The man ran over to the underpass where was sitting his wife and little girl. He tore the hamburger into three pieces and they began to eat! What did I do? I wept! I then thanked God for giving me a little grandson who had taught his grandpa a mighty important lesson. Our Lord has taught us: "Do good to all men, especially them of the household of faith" (Galatians 6:10). He also said: "Pure religion and undefiled is to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and keep yourself unspotted from the world" (James 1:27). And, here is one I shall never forget: "And, a little child shall lead them" (Isaiah 11:6). We cannot allow ourselves to be selfish. We have been blessed by so many things. God has been good to us. We should..."labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth" (Ephesians 4:28). |
